Pronouns: He | Him | His

Dr. Kevin Hwang is a spine surgeon who cares for patients experiencing pain or functional limitations from a wide range of spinal disorders. He provides comprehensive evaluations, diagnosis, treatment and education. Drawing on his expertise in spinal anatomy, biomechanics and pathology, he tailors treatment plans to each patient's needs. He works collaboratively with a team of specialists at UCSF and MarinHealth to optimize outcomes from conservative and nonoperative treatments. For patients who require surgery, he embraces minimally invasive techniques that result in less post-op pain and faster recoveries than traditional approaches.

Hwang's research focuses on optimizing spinal surgery outcomes and providing equitable surgical care to diverse populations. He is interested in incorporating new technologies into surgical care, with recent projects on decreasing neck pain after posterior cervical spinal surgery and using neural networks (a type of artificial intelligence) to automate fracture detection.

Before coming to Northern California, he was a spine surgeon and faculty member at Massachusetts General Hospital and an instructor at Harvard Medical School.

Outside of work, Hwang enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, as well as running in the hills of San Francisco or Marin County.
